A week in our home School

It's been so lovely seeing some snippets of how other families are spending their days while we are all forced to be at home.
I thought I would share what we were up to this week. Before you download, here are some things to keep in mind:
  • My child is in Prep. All the activities in this schedule are designed for his year level. However, even if your child isn't in Prep, this schedule will give you a good idea of how you can structure your day, and it should be fairly easy to subsitute the activities for more age-appropriate ones for your child.
  • I am a teacher. I love this stuff. It doesn't take me long to whip up some activities for my kids. (In fact, it took me wayyyyyyyy too long to actually format the schedule for you, it was all in my head!) Don't beat yourself up if you find it difficult to plan activities for your child.
  • There are deliberately no time slots on this schedule. It's designed to be flexible. You might be trying to work from home, maybe your child is only able to work efficiently in the morning. Perhaps you have to work, or have other things going on. That's cool! Just plan the activities for the times that suit your whole family best.
  • I always overplan. Pretty early on in my teaching career, I learnt this little trick. I always plan more activities than I think my student will complete. This is so you're never left without anything to entertain a bunch of students who, let's face it, outnumber you. Some days this week, we got through all the activities in the schedule. Some days we didn't, and that didn't bother me at all.
  • Use your strengths. I used to be a competitive dancer, so I enjoy yoga, dance and gymnastics. If Art is your jam like my sister, create some killer artworks together. See the picture above of my beautiful neices and their self-portraits. You love cooking? Involve your child in your daily food preparation, whilst teaching mathematical concepts such as fractions or halving (1/2 a cup of flour). Science is your favourite? Research some experiments you can conduct together.
  • Use your child's interests. My child loves building, Lego and climbing trees, so these were the rewards I chose to use. I also tried to incorporate these activities into their learning.
  • This is the perfect time to focus on your child's needs. If your child is behind in reading, go back to basics: sounds and blending. If they need help with numeracy, give them the one-on-one they don't always get in the classroom.
  • Screens are not the enemy. Do I limit screen time for my kids? Absolutely. Do I use screens as a tool for safely occuping them while I get things done? You betcha! Reading Eggs has been great for my 5 year old. Cosmic Kids Yoga is amazing. For a special treat, I sometimes let them watch a movie or tv show of choice.
